Once in Afghanistan

“We walked in on weddings, on funerals…
whatever was going on and vaccinated everyone.”

Once in Afghanistan tells the story of an all-female group of vaccinators (to eradicate smallpox) serving in a country of particular importance and great interest now to Americans. The volunteers’ frank stories of working door-to-door in Afghan villages are sometimes humorous, sometimes poignant, and always stimulating.

Their stories and photographs take viewers into a world over the mud walls inside the compounds where people of completely different backgrounds recognized one another.

The film brings up issues common to virtually all Peace Corps volunteers. A central focus of the film shows how being in Afghanistan was “with all its pain, a magic moment.”
