Life on a Shoestring: Perspectives on Stepping Out of PovertyFebruary 19 – March 23, 2008 Authors Barbara Ehrenreich and Phil Devol to Headline Community Dialog Series The incidence of poverty is a growing concern for our nation. And, for our own community. Locally, from 2000 to 2006, the rate of poverty for children living in the City of Fort Collins increased 132 percent. A 62 percent increase in the overall poverty rate for the same time-frame found almost 20% of all Fort Collins residents living at or near poverty levels. Life on a Shoestring: Perspectives on Stepping Out of Poverty is a month-long series of presentations, community discussions, and perspectives to help advance a community dialog on the issue of poverty in Fort Collins/Northern Colorado and the role each of us plays in guiding our community to a path of renewed economic self-sufficiency. The events that comprise the Life on a Shoestring series will take place from February 19th through March 22nd in locations throughout Fort Collins, Colorado. Highlights include a keynote lunch presentation by author Barbara Ehrenreich, an evening discussion on the best practices of other communities by author/trainer Phil DeVol, and the long-awaited production of Nickel & Dimed by OpenStage Theatre & Company to only name a few opportunities to participate. This series, a unique community-wide program, is a collaborative effort of Beet Street with WomenGive, a leadership initiative of United Way of Larimer County in partnership with the Women’s Foundation of Colorado. We hope you’ll join us for these exciting events. For more information about this landmark dialog and where to obtain tickets, check: Barbara Ehrenreich on Working for Change |
